WAREHAM, MA- Fugitive, alleged accomplices captured (05-22-10)
Gina Giovangelo was hiding out in a Wareham motel room yesterday when she got a text message telling her the police were closing in fast. Without changing out of her dress or bothering to put on shoes, the 18-year-old did the only thing she's done since allegedly running over and killing a disabled woman Tuesday night: She ran. Giovangelo found in WarehamGiovangelo bolted barefoot into the woods and led a dozen police officers on a mile-long, 45-minute chase that ended with her capture in a quiet Onset neighborhood. "She made every effort to escape," Wareham Police Chief Richard Stanley said. Two hours later when Giovangelo arrived at the Barnstable police station in a cruiser wearing leg shackles, she had scrapes and small cuts visible on her bare legs and feet. She ran barefoot through woods, streams and backyards before being apprehended, Barnstable Detective Sgt. John Murphy said. Cameron Byers, 20, of Hyannis and Jordan Robinson, 20, of Centerville were also arrested at the Wareham motel and were charged with being accessories after the fact. The police say the pair knowingly harbored, concealed and assisted Giovangelo even though they knew she was wanted by the police. Giovangelo has been charged with the Tuesday night hit-and-run death of Lillian White, 47, who was struck as she crossed North Street in downtown Hyannis in her motorized wheelchair. capecodonline.com
